MELCOE Software Products

Macquarie University's E-Learning Centre Of Excellence (MELCOE) doesn't just conduct research, it also translates research results into real-life, production quality software. Most MELCOE software is freely available as open source software. MELCOE releases software as open source to foster collaborative development, and as part of its commitment to the public good of education.

LAMS (Learning Activity Management System) is an easy-to-use e-learning solution that allows teachers to build reusable learning activities (modules) and connect them together to become a an activity sequence. By following the sequence, learners are given an environment that they can focus and learn new knowledge while collaborating with others. And teachers can track learner activities with LAM's real-time monitoring environment.

RAMS

Research Activity Management System

The RAMS focuses on capturing E-Research activityflows so that they can be analysed, shared, re-used and adapted. This will lead to a national website providing a library of “actionable” best practice activityflows for common research processes and the Research Activity Management System (RAMS) to run them. This approach draws on the success of capturing and sharing “Learning Designs” within e-learning, and applies it to the challenges of people-based workflow in E-Research.

Muradora

Scalable Digital Repository Solution

[ demo ]

Muradora is a web-based graphical user interface for Fedora (a well-known digital repository solution). In addition to Fedora's highly scalable architecture that can manage vast amount of digital data, by adapting Muradora & its middleware authorization components (built on XACML standards), external users with federated identities can now be granted access to the repository (via Shibboleth authentication). Because of Muradora's highly intuitive interface, access control is no longer a complicated task, greatly reducing the administration required to support the system. For organisations that plan to deploy a large-scale repository for managing their heterogeneous digital assets, Muradora is the best answer. What's more, it's totally free under the Apache 2 license.

IAMSuite

Identity and Access Management Suite

IAMSuite (Identity and Access Management Suite) is a secure access and collaboration environment. IAMSuite supports Shibboleth-based authentication and Single Sign-On (SSO), facilitates a "mini" trust federation (also know as a VO Federation), which accepts commercial certificates, issues trial certificates, manages mutually trusted [IdPs] and SPs, and generates metadata for those [IdPs] and SPs. Full details in IAMSuite homepage.

Autograph

Secured Privacy Control

[Homepage]

[Brochure (PDF)]

Autograph allows an IdP member to protect their privacy by providing for control of attributes released to individual service providers. Autograph is used by IdP members to view attributes released to specific SPs on their behalf, and to deny the release of attributes in accordance with their privacy requirements.

ShARPE

Shibboleth Attribute Release Policy Editor

ShARPE provides attribute-mapping functionality allowing the IdP administrator to express the required mapping using special functions. For example, attributes may be mapped by name (one-to-one or by concatenation), assigned static values, hashed (useful for targetedID implementations). ShARPE is used by the IdP administrator to manage users’ accesses to SPs via service descriptions, manage institution-wide ARPs, manage group ARPs, and specify mappings between the IdP attribute schema and SP schemas.

People Picker

Access Grant based on Trusted IdP Records

[Homepage]

[Brochure (PDF)]

People Picker allows SPs to pick a federation user and give them access to its resources. Based on trusted IdP records within the Federation, SPs are able to discover authoritative user information (name and email) from People Picker. Information discovered manages the user’s privacy restrictions as well as the restrictions of the institution to which they belong.

Federation Manager

The Heart of the Federation

Federation Manager is an easy to use tool to manage centrally institutional participation entry within Shibboleth in the AAF. It offers numerous features giving flexible configuration of entities as well as strong enforcement of the AAF Shibboleth Operational Requirements and Recommendations Document. Other tools and processes are the limbs and body of the Federation. Metadata generation and management are fully controlled by Federation Manager.

Online Librarian

Provides Answers to Reference Desk Questions

[Homepage]

[Brochure (PDF)

Online Librarian (OLL) has been running as a production service offering help to students of the Macquarie and Murdoch universities allowing them to ask reference desk questions directly to a live (online) librarian. Both universities have thus been able to increase their information desk’s operating hours, adding 22 hours per week. In the first 8 months, the information desk received close to 1600 calls. Murdoch OLL team has recently received an Australian Learning and Teaching Council award for their outstanding contribution to student learning experience.

Federation Helpdesk

Real-time Chat and Support Service

Federation Chat Helpdesk offer the advantages of Online Librarian (OLL) by allowing users to chat directly with any MAMS support team member online. Multiple support members can handle and transfer conversations in real time to other members (eg, transfer from Helpdesk to Advanced Technical Support). This approach has major advantages over other forms of communications (e.g. email), as responses can be provided in real time, enabling the dialogue which is often required for complex queries, as opposed to simple question and answer queries.
